How to track whether ChatGPT recommends your business

A screenshot is not a reporting system. Track consistent prompts, sources and enquiries so the result can survive scrutiny.

AI answers vary. That makes measurement harder than reading a fixed results page, but not impossible. The solution is a controlled observation process and honest limitations.

The aim is not to prove a permanent rank. It is to detect whether the business is gaining useful coverage across the questions buyers ask.

Build the prompt set

Create groups for problems, services, comparisons, price, location and sector. Keep branded prompts separate. Write neutral language that a customer could plausibly use.

Give each prompt a stable ID. Do not silently replace losing prompts with easier ones or the trend line becomes meaningless.

Record enough context

Log the exact prompt, date, product or mode, stated location, response, mentioned businesses and cited URLs. Capture screenshots for audit evidence but retain structured fields for analysis.

Note whether an answer used web search. A response without current retrieval should not be interpreted in the same way as a sourced search answer.

Use coverage and accuracy metrics

Citation coverage is the share of tracked prompts where the business receives a relevant citation. Mention coverage includes uncited mentions. Track incorrect claims and outdated facts separately.

Weight or segment high-intent prompts rather than allowing dozens of easy informational prompts to hide poor commercial visibility.

Connect the journey to leads

Review analytics referral sources and landing pages. Keep UTM parameters intact where available. Add a lead-source question that includes ChatGPT or another AI assistant.

Ask qualified prospects what they searched and what persuaded them. Self-reported attribution is imperfect, but it captures journeys where someone reads an answer and later types the brand into Google.

Report uncertainty honestly

Show sample size, test conditions and changes made during the period. Do not call a first-place mention a permanent number-one ranking.

Use trends over several checks. The business outcome matters most: qualified enquiries, assisted conversions and revenue associated with the discovery path.

The takeaway

Maintain a stable prompt panel and connect it to analytics and lead-source evidence. Report coverage, citations, accuracy and qualified enquiries—not isolated screenshots.

Questions people ask

No. Search Console reports Google Search performance. AI prompt monitoring and referral analytics are separate measurement tasks.

Monthly is a practical baseline for many small businesses. Very volatile or high-value markets may justify more frequent sampling.

Use consistent conditions and record them. Where possible, compare neutral sessions or tools because personal context can affect answers.

There is no universal benchmark. Establish your own baseline against named competitors and prioritised commercial prompts.

Referral data can identify some clicked visits. It will miss users who later return directly or through branded search, so supplement it with lead-source capture.
