ChatGPT SEO vs Google SEO: what UK businesses need to know

They share the same foundations, but visibility, measurement and the shape of the answer are not identical.

The phrase ‘ChatGPT SEO’ is useful shorthand, but it also attracts nonsense. There is no universal ChatGPT ranking report equivalent to a conventional keyword tracker, and there is no special block of text that guarantees selection.

A sensible strategy keeps the shared foundation and adds the work conventional SEO reports often miss: entity clarity, extractable answers, citation monitoring and prompt-level analysis.

Where the work overlaps

Both channels need crawlable pages, accurate titles, logical internal links, useful content and independent authority. A slow, thin or confusing website does not become competitive because it has an llms.txt file.

Google’s own guidance for AI features says established Search fundamentals remain relevant. That is a strong reason to reject anyone selling ‘AI SEO’ as an alternative universe disconnected from technical SEO and content quality.

Where the work differs

Traditional SEO often centres on a query and a ranked results page. Conversational discovery can combine several needs: ‘Which Manchester agency understands AI search, works with small businesses and publishes transparent pricing?’ The answer may synthesise multiple sources rather than return ten equal links.

That raises the value of concise facts, comparisons, named evidence and consistent identity. It also makes prompt mapping more important than treating every keyword as an isolated string.

How measurement differs

Google Search Console reports queries, pages, clicks, impressions and average position for Google Search. AI visibility needs an additional prompt-monitoring layer across the products your customers use.

Track mentions, citations, sentiment, factual accuracy and referral sessions. Then connect those sessions to enquiries. Citation count without commercial context is another vanity metric.

How to divide the budget

If the site has indexing problems, weak service pages or an unmanaged Google Business Profile, fix conventional foundations first. They support both channels. Do not divert the entire SEO budget into speculative AI tactics.

Once the foundation works, allocate a defined test budget to prompt research, content gaps, entity consistency, digital PR and measurement. Review it against leads and assisted conversions after a meaningful period.

A joined-up monthly workflow

Use Search Console and analytics to find demand. Use prompt tracking to identify conversational gaps. Improve the service, comparison, pricing and answer pages that serve both. Earn relevant third-party coverage. Re-test and report what changed.

The team should not publish one SEO article and a separate AI article that compete for the same intent. One strong page can serve humans, search results and answer systems when its purpose is clear.

The takeaway

Keep one search strategy with two measurement layers. Fix conventional SEO foundations first, then add prompt tracking, entity work and citation analysis. Splitting the disciplines into rival silos wastes content and budget.

Questions people ask

The label is informal, but the work is real: improving discoverability, entity clarity, source evidence and measurement for conversational search experiences.

Businesses should not plan around that assumption. Conventional search, maps and websites continue to handle major discovery and conversion journeys.

Yes. A clear, useful and well-supported page can serve both, although neither visibility outcome is guaranteed.

Technical SEO, service pages, local profiles and conversion tracking come first. Add AI-specific monitoring and gap work once those foundations are credible.

Use citation or mention coverage across a stable set of commercially relevant prompts, then connect it to qualified enquiries and revenue.
